hello all! i’ve had betta fish for about three years now and finally experienced one of them jumping out of the tank; i had it open for literally a split second when he jumped out and onto my floor. i was able to get him back in and he’s swimming around ok but im worried he injured one of his eyes. you can see in the photos that one of them is smaller and completely dark while one is a bit swollen and cloudy.

what can i do to support him while he heals? what should i expect from this injury? i’ve heard of epsom salt being used when a betta fish is injured but ive never done that before, im not sure if its applicable here. is it possible for this injured eye to somehow just atrophy and fall off, leaving him with just one eye, or will it remain intact but cloudy like this?

i honestly don’t know how it would be possible for such a small creature to injure just one eye without having severe internal injuries as well but im just hoping for the best

i appreciate any help you all can provide. i love this sweet boy

that’s why you have a lid lol, for sure get one.

nothing special. keep the water clean with more frequent water changes. it should heal, but if you see any other developments (the eye doesn’t heal, or bacterial infection, etc.), make sure to take action then!

  2. It may heal naturally. As another commenter recommended, I’d focus on keeping the water pristine by doing more water changes than usual. If things don’t improve, then it’s time to consider treatment. Not sure exactly what that would be to be honest, sorry. Fingers crossed for you

  3. Ive had fish with eye injuries and they heal within a few days. If he jumped id be more worried about internal issues but just make sure you have good water parameters and if you can add tannins to the water.

I have 2 jumpers. Keep the water perfect. I personally would add the following:

Treat your fish with a broad-spectrum antibiotic, like tetracycline or erythromycin, following the instructions on the package.

Simply, injuries can get infected. You can setup a hospital tank if necessary.

  5. Seachem StressGuard might help. Also almond leaves for some tannins. Otherwise like others have mentioned, keep the water pristine. I’d probably be doing small daily or other day water changes.
