2 days ago, I bought this aquarium sponge to put over the arm of my filter, as I felt the flow was too strong for my boy. I used fishing wire to tie it on. Yesterday I noticed he was a lot calmer than usual, and he spent time resting on the bottom of the tank but came up to see me as usual. Last night he was sleeping in his hammock leaf (I've never seen him use it before), and when I fed him, he seemed to miss some of the pellets like he couldn't see them properly perhaps? This morning, he's dead!!!! He has been perfectly fine up until now, I only bought him in November after my other betta passed away at 3 years old. Would the sponge have caused this? I didn't wash it before putting it in. I'm so sad and feel so awful that i may have killed him!

Can you tell us more details about the tank? Like size, was it cycled properly, how often water was changed, tankmates, details like that. It would help people find out what went wrong. Also a sponge on a filter is a good idea, I might jam one onto my filter outflow to lower surface agitation
How did you wash the sponge?
