Betta Fish: Sudden unknown enraged betta issue solved

Tldr: it was window marker, specifically just the pink drawings

After HOURS of trying to figure out why my betta fish suddenly hated everything in life, I finally figured it out. I had just got a new brighter lamp and a whole bunch of new plants. He was so happy until I turned the new light on. It was the first time I had ever seen him flare his gills. I couldn’t switch back to my old light because it’s too dark for my plants. I tried everything, multiple methods of dimming my light, raising the light higher, putting his sleeping spot back to the way it was, removing tank mates, new backgrounds. At this point I assumed I traumatized him until I noticed he would start a flare episode by looking at one of two pink drawings at the back of my tank which have been there since we put him in a month ago. The SECOND I erased them he went back to being normal 😭. So I’m assuming the new light made him suddenly be able to see them.

But what’s funny is that there’s other drawings on the tank that are green, blue, white, and yellow. It was only the pink ones which were just scribbles. So if anyone has a suddenly angry fish, they might hate a certain color.
