This is Duddits! He is homely, but he is lively and funny! He comes to the glass when I come to see him. I may be misinterpreting his behavior, but I love watching him regardless. Since I got him a few weeks ago his condition has improved significantly already and it makes me feel so much joy. I really assumed, given his condition, that even with appropriate care, he may not make it for long. At this point, I think he’s going to be with me for some time to come! I’m learning more about how to enrich his life daily.
I’ve had so many animas in my life, and I find myself shocked at how much I love this boy. I have kept reptiles for many years now (after being initially intimidated by their care) and while I love fish, I swore that I wouldn’t have fish because water changes seemed like they’d be a pain.
Then, as I picked up dog food one night, this sad little guy was on clearance for 75% off and I couldn’t leave him. He was lively but didn’t look like he was in the best shape and the woman at the register said he’d been there longer than any other betta. He came out to $1.50. I knew what he would require, so I set to ordering everything as soon as possible.
I did NOT know about cycling, which I feel like an idiot for, BUT I have been following the fish in cycling guide from this sub and he is absolutely thriving. The water parameters are good and I’ve ordered some duck weed to add to the surface.
I had no idea that I could love a fish this much, but he is such a wonderful addition to my life. I can’t believe that I thought I wouldn’t enjoy fish keeping.

Yayyy congrats on your new friend!! And no amount of plants is too much!
My fish were my first pet I had. I had fish and hamster growing up but it wasn’t MY pet. So when I moved out I was finally able to get some and I love them so much and it just makes me so happy seeing bettas thrive and their whole Look changes. I love watching my fishies just do their thing 🥰
