Aquariums: Emily Bowes & Philip Henry Gosse: The Couple that Invented the Modern Aquarium

Philip Henry Gosse’s 1856 book, The Aquarium: An Unveiling of the Wonders of the Deep Sea, was the first time the word “Aquarium” was published. It featured detailed instructions of aquarium care and the brilliant artwork of his wife and poet Emily Bowes Gosse. The book kicked off the trend of aquariums in Victorian life that has lead to our hobby’s current form today.
