I stopped fish/aquatic plant keeping about ten years ago after my grandfather died and there was no one to look after them and I didn’t have the space at my very small house, it also didn’t feel the same without him there.

After I found this old cheap acrylic tank in mums garage, I set myself a challenge to build a tiny tank in his honour for the cheapest price possible.

The 20l tank was free, got some plants from a neighbour friend for free and the hardscape rocks are from the garden. The only things I bought was a new heater, the sand, the wood hardscaping, some root tabs and assorted tank chemicals.

Total spend: $95 AUD (67 USD)

I literally just finished setting it up and I’m realising that I’ve forgotten a lot about tanks, so any reminders of crucial things to do and any advice or layout adjustments are very welcome.

I’m thinking of putting 3 or so guppies in there while I set up a bigger, more suitable tank and they’re small.

  1. Guppies need more than 20 litres, especially because they need to be in groups of at least five. You could MAYBE get away with Tetras OR a longfinned Betta. But no guppies sorry
