Got a weird legal question. I picked up my first Spey rod this week, and I’m hoping to get down to the river soon to get some practice in. Problem is, basically all of the river in Wa are closed until May, realistically. Is there any issue with me going down to my nearest big river and practice casting with no fly? I sort of expect to be reported for poaching, and if a game warden does come down I’ll be able to show them that I’m not actually fishing. Is this stupid?

I would call wdfw/ask via email if you can break the hook off of an old rusty fly and practice with that.
