I have a pair of Pflueger Arbor 7440 spinning reels. 11.2 ounces, 4.3 to 1 gear ratio. Retrieval is 2 feet per handle rotation. They casts good distance. I bought them originally for catfishing because they seemed tough. I don't understand the nuances of reels. What are the strengths/cons of these reels compared with more popular bass spinning reels?

  1. That’s a pretty big spinning reel, a bit big for bass, not that you couldn’t use it. I generally use size 1000-3500 depending on application going from lighter to heavier applications. Bigger reels are better for distance in general. My lightest applications are like hair jigs or Ned rigs and my heaviest application is dock skipping, mostly for a stiff rod to get them out from under the dock. I use a St. Croix MH rod for that
