Given that this seems in part a Betta appreciation group, I thought I’d share my newfound appreciation for Bettas – and clearly my love for the hobby.

I’m really loving Cinder. He’s happy, active, inquisitive. I really see the appeal now.

His home is a 300L planted tank running a Eheim canister filter. His tank-mates are (I haven’t witnessed any clashes at all – he seems to not care the others are there):

Fish

  • Medaka (ricefish)
  • Harlequin rasbora
  • Rummy-nose tetra
  • Neon tetra
  • Rainbow pencilfish
  • Otocinclus

Invertebrates

  • Cherry shrimp – breeding with shrimplet survival!
  • Glass shrimp
  • Ramshorn snails

Aquatic plants

  • Anubias (large leaf)
  • Anubias nana (small leaf)
  • Java moss
  • Subwassertang
  • Amazon sword
  • Vallisneria
  • Elodea
  • Red tiger lotus
  • Duckweed in plant rings

Emergent plant

  • Lucky bamboo

Tank has been going for well over a year, so fully cycled. Cinder has been in for 3 months now.

I change the water or supplement once a month or so, only if my water parameters suggest it’s needed (nitrates can climb – overzealous feeding at times, I think). I test every few days with strips, once a week or so with the API solutions.

Everyone seems happy thus far.

Thanks 🙂
