Bought from petco. Did a fish in cycle because by the time I figured out what to do it was too late. Hopefully he'll be ok. Does anything look wrong?? I have heater, filter, light, and declorinated water.

  1. swap the fake plants gor real plants, they can shred his fins. also there’s no point to using aquasoil if you don’t have real plants

  2. Sorry, how long have you had him if you’ve already finished the fish in cycle?

I also second the other commenter in regards to live plants and aquasoil. It’s recommended to plant heavily when using aquasoils as they release quite a bit of nutrients into the water column and will turn the tank into an algae magnet if there’s nothing to eat it up. It’s wasted on artifical plants and you would have had an easier (and cheaper) time going with inert gravel in that case. But still, 100% recommend swapping the plastic for live. Hygrophilas, rotalas, pearlweed, valisneria, lotus, sessiliflora, crypts, etc are all easy plants that will fill out the tank a lot more, make good use of the soil, and create a safer and natural home for the betta. 🙂

Edit: keep in mind soils alter water chemistry. They lower the pH and KH. If your tap differs from what’s in the tank, you will have to really keep it in mind when doing water changes as too big of a water change can be stressful and shock the fish.

  3. Oh hi little one! 😍 if you’re doing a fish in cycle, swap out plastic for real plants. It will help with the ammonia and nitrites. Floaters are great! You don’t need super fancy stuff
 Anubis, Java fern, etc.

Get a master test kit to test the nitrogen cycle or it’ll end badly for him đŸ«Ą

  5. Since you only found about the cycle process after the fact, which i can’t blame you when there’s little to no push to know by the stores, i would definitely pick up a product called Fritz TurboStart 700 for freshwater, its a little pricey but it contains live beneficial bacteria which will help Jumpstart your nitrogen cycle for the best chance with your baby. And as others said go for live plants and the fake ones can hurt your betta, Best of Luck to you and the baby

  6. I strongly recommend anubias for a plant for him! They’re fantastic and hardy and have lovely large leaves that bettas like to lounge upon. You can literally just super glue it to a rock or something so it sinks and doesn’t float back up – don’t bury the rhizome (the ‘trunk’ that the leaves stem from; only bury the roots if anything).

My personal favorite floater is Amazon Frogbit, but I don’t think most Petsmart/Petco carry floaters. If you have a local fish store though, they’ll likely have some for quite cheap.

You could also do a stem plant like moneywort since you have soil. That is a nice soft and hardy plant that typically grows quite well and can be easily propagated in your tank to flush out the background with it.

  7. You don’t need to buy real plants, they take a lot of work to maintain and you seem to be a new fish owner. So for now just get soft silk ones. Those hard and spiked ones will rip up his fins and scales.

Test your water and do water changes accordingly. Or just stay ahead of the ammonia and nitrite. I see he is the only inhabitant so just a couple pellets a day and you will be fine.

Definitely agree with the live plants comments since you have aquasoil! I personally love planted tanks and think they’re so pretty/fun to maintain. Like easy, mini bonsai.

I’d recommend fast-growing plants for sure, you want them to be soaking up all the nitrogen cycle by-products as much as possible. Anacharis is a really hardy, easy, fast growing one you can find pretty easily, as well as Hornwort (can be kinda ugly tho). Lugwigia repens is a powerhouse and really pretty too. Floating plants like Red Root Floaters and Salvinia can help with algae (reducing light), and also soak up nutrients in a good way.

Unfortunately Petco/Petsmart don’t always carry faster growing plants (definitely are exceptions though). And I’d stay away from Anubias/Crypts/Java Fern/Sword plants, which are great for later on, but what you need right now are some speedy weedies to help with that cycle. R/Aquaswap is great for finding cuttings if you’re having trouble too! Good luck, and cute baby!!

  10. Good on you for asking for advice! Love to see when people are able to put away their pride to focus on their baby’s lives! Good luck!!! đŸ«§đŸ’™
