I have an okuma reel c20 on an ugly stik dock runner. I noticed this has been an issue even when I had the original reel that came with the dock runner. I had the new reel spooled from someone at bass pro shops, but I’ve still been dealing with the same issue as before. Any help would be appreciated

  1. Is your anti-reverse engaged? If not then when you set the hook the reel will quickly spin backwards from the sudden pressure and dump line off the spool in a tangle. You should only be able to turn the reel handle forwards, not backwards.

  2. Could be caused by line memory from sitting on the spool. Whenever I use mono on a reel I always let the spool sit in a bowl of hot water for about ten minutes and never had an issue.

It usualy happens more with braid, but it is possible that the line isn’t tight around the spool and is spinning around it,this will feel like your drag is open when you try to reel in any wieght or a fish.
