This is my 6 gal Fluval tank. I'm aiming for the FF heavily planted, soil/sand substrate method. I put in a total of 5.5 gal, which I was concerned about because I didn't know how much the substrate and our center piece would take up. Will a betta be happy here??

Yes, that would be great for a Betta. I recommend a long fin variety, like a vailtail, they don’t need as much swimming room as a short-tailed plakatt. Also I’ve had really good luck with healthy and long lived vailtails.
