After many years I'm finally returning to fishing. I'd like to start with fish like perch, zander and pike. The one rod I have left is a 213cm (7ft) spinning rod with a casting weight of 7-15g and a size 1000 reel.

I also have a 1000 reel without a rod, and I'd like to get a second rod for whenever a friend would like to join. I almost ordered one very similar to the one I already have, but then I thought it might be nice to pick something a bit different, so that I can add some variety to my own fishing too.

What I came up with is to get either a travel rod or an even lighter rod (as a 1000 reel might not be optimal with a heavier rod). A couple of rods I could do that with:

  • Abu Garcia Tormentor Travel Spin (213cm, 5-18g): this is the travel option. Besides the feature of being stored at a length of 71cm (28"), it has very similar characteristics to my first rod. I like the idea of the travel aspect but I'm not sure how often I'd really need it, since the other rods are not that big either.
  • Mitchell Traxx MX3LE Lure Spinning (213cm, 3-14g): with this rod the idea is to go lighter than my current rod, since this one has a casting weight of 3-14g. This would add the option of a somewhat different kind of fishing. When fishing with a friend we'd fish in slightly different ways too, but I don't think that'd be any less fun.
  • Mitchell Traxx MX5 Ultra Light Jig (203cm, 2-8g): same idea but, with 2-8g casting weight, this would be even lighter (and more different) than the previous one.
  • The Carabus Exquisite from Abu Garcia: even lighter, with a 1.5-4.5g casting weight at 183cm/6ft.

These are all pretty cheap options, some of them currently on sale, as for now I'd like to keep costs low.

Any thoughts on which way to go here? What do you think could add more enjoyment: a travel rod, a lighter rod, or an even lighter rod? I've never fished that light, but it might be fun.
