Is this ice safe at 4inches?

  1. Impossible to tell you for sure based on a single photo. All I can do is tell you that 4 inches of strong clear ice is the recommended minimum for walking on.

Now the issue is that ice is not uniform. It may be 4 inches in one spot and 2 inches or less in another. Ice that thin can never be trusted and you should be testing the ice with a spud bar every step as you walk.

If the ice is not a good quality clear ice then the 4 inch minimum doesn’t apply.

So what I’m saying is if you want to go out use caution, test the ice every step or 2, and if the ice isn’t good clear ice then stay off it.

  2. I could be wrong but that looks like candle ice. All the vertical bubbles like that would sketch me out personally, do you have a spud bar you can hit it with?
