I recently seeded a new 14 gallon cube that I intend to use for a betta. I'm debating adding some additional fish/life to the tank and I've heard it's better to add those to the tank first, saving the betta for last.
I'm curious, in this set up, what you'd add not knowing the temperament of the betta yet. I don't know that it's big enough for any schooling fish (tetras or rasboras?). It's too new for shrimp (could add those later). Maybe some Cory's?
Or am I really limited by the size and would be better off just keeping a betta solo?
With regard to the tank, More plants are on the way as well as a hammock and cave rock.

I wouldn’t. 20G minimum for any fish. You can add shrimp and snails though!
Id recommend going for a betta and bottom dwellers or a nano school & bottom dwellers – not both
I wouldn’t add anything else to it with the betta besides shrimp and snails. Even if the betta looks peaceful, it’s likely to still go after any other fish
In spite of the water volume, the cube shape limits your choice by a lot as it doesnt really give anyone usable horizontal swimming space. Id do shrimp and pygmy corydoras tops, nothing else. Id definitely add a lot more plants to it first through before even thinking about additional stocking!
I’m doing the same thing you are with a 10 gallon right now and I just added Pygmy Corys. They are really cute and people say they get along with most bettas well. They tend to rest and flutter around the bottomish mid ground of my tank.
It’s not that wise to add other fish unless they eat something else like otos because bettas tend to eat themselves sick while you try to get the others food. But my betta decided she even likes algae based foods so she only lives with shrimp.
Betta fish are not community tank fish. Amano shrimp (not neos) if you can keep the betta from eating them and rabbit snails.
Bottom dwellers and glass suckers are your best bet. I have two 14 gallons cubes like this
One has a betta and at first I tried to pair it with 8 harlequin Rasboras. It was a bit too crowded. They got along but they looked uncomfortable. Eventually there was one rasboras tried to establish dominance and kind of took out the others. The Betta is now with a bunch of neo shrimp, 5 otos, 5 habrosus corys and 4 java loaches and everyone stays out of everyone else’s way. The loaches are a bit too active for this style of tank so I plan on transplanting them to a bigger tank that I’m setting up.
My second tank was not meant for a betta but I ended up housing a 3 year old betta for a few months cause my friend’s daughter no longer wanted him and he was near the end of life. Hi was pretty docile by then and got along with the rest of the tank. cardinal tetras, pygmy corys, and shrimp.
