Y’all! Last week our betta of 4 years, Mr. Samurai, a Scarlett Veil Tail BEAUTY passed.

We were very sad and a couple days ago we went to find a new beauty like him but none of the stores had one so we brought home Mr. Samurai II, who is called a “HellBoy” beta… find not near as pretty but the guy told us he was a “young” fish and would grow longer fins. Idk about that but hopefully.

Anyway! This is the SECOND time in three days that I’ve caught him ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE WATER! What?! Is this a normal thing?

In 4 years I never once saw Mr. Samurai (I) with anything but his nose out of the water.

Tank heat is a steady 80° and he has little leaves and such to lay on…

Right after I saw this I lightly touched him and he sprang off in great offense and swam around eating his bug bites… it’s on video but I guess Reddit won’t allow posting both photos and videos…

I will check but it should be all good – complete water change after our loss, and waited several days before introducing him. I’ll post what I find.

  2. If (!) your water turns out to be fine, could it be his way of taking a rest from the water flow?
I’m thinking he might be used to less flow than whatever you have (this is 100% from my friend telling me his betta would rest on a leaf with head out of water, this looks a bit extreme but maybe it’s related and maybe there’s no way for him to properly rest without emerging this much).

Not normal at all. Something in the water is causing him discomfort or pain and he’s trying to escape it.

Please check your water parameters for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH ASAP. It’s good practice to test the water before adding fish and monitor it after, especially if there’s a risk the nitrogen cycle bacteria have been disrupted (which a 100% water change will have impacted).

Also more water would be good for him. It’s quite low.

Ok so check you water now and add some prime in just incase ammonia is high it won’t hurt will only help add more treated water to the tank because I actually had a red one of mine do the same thing he loved loved loved to sleep on top of the filter water flow it was so weird but for him to come out of the water like that I’m thinking something wrong with his water parameters and he’s using his labyrinth organ to breathe oxygen, and trying to expel his body out of the water as much as possible

4 years a really old time for a betta could just be his time. For what it’s worth in the wild bettas will sleep on the top of leaves out of water as a survival/defense mechanism to avoid being preyed upon so it can be normal behavior.

Is your heater old? It could be sending electric shocks in the water and your fish is trying to escape.
