Browsing used kayaks. Could save $600 on this one, but is has a crack around the rear carrying handle. Dude said "it doesn't affect performance"… Is a repair like this any good, or should I keep looking?

man i saved $900 on mine from marketplace and it was used once. please pass this deal up, there will be another one in 2 weeks time, no sense in settling for a cracked hull for some minor savings.

How much are they asking? do you have any wider view of the damaged area? I mean he could be right in that it would affect paddling performance/bouyancy, but what about portability? that is a large repair and i would be concerned about carrying a heavy kayak with that handle. I would take the “doesn’t affect performance” with a grain of salt. Looks like he did the repair himself. I would be skeptical myself.

Sketchy repair, looks like they missed a spot.
I have never seen a crack like that before.
Looks like a crack by the handle, which the owner continued to use, cracked the other side and then just left the kayak out to get worse before repairing.
I just cut up some kayaks and purposely tried to make cracks worse for fun, couldn’t achieve that if I tried.

I wouldn’t.

Keep looking. That is some serious damage as the crack looks like it went full circle.

It has to be welded. No glue/epoxy actually bond strongly to polyethylene. (marine goop doesnt actually bond either which is what he probably used).
If welded, it will be as strong as new if done well
