I’ve had to treat with expel p for Camallanus, and if you’ve ever treated with that, you’ll know you have to change the tank every 24 hours. I was trying to change every other day because my tap water has .5 ammonia in it. But unfortunately the precautions didn’t work.

And here’s the big mistake, I changed out the filter because I’ve seen the worms stuck inside there when treating before.

I added some commercial bacteria, and seachem prime. Please give me any advice that’s not “change the tank.” That will only add more ammonia

Ammonia – .5-1ppm

NO2 – 0

NO3 – 0

  1. Add floating plants, fast growing and great nitrogen sponges.

Seachem prime also screws with the ammonium reading. Since it converts Ammonia to Ammonium so it’s artificial inflated. I would give it a day and see if it stays.

You have to change water every 24 hours to remove parasites from the substrate, not because of the meds. You don’t have to change the water, but you might want to dose every week so you kill the adult forms of the worms.

This may be something you should have a quarantine tank and proper water changes. Sorry to be bearer of bad news. Hope this help with your strategy.

Edit: quarantine tank has two uses:

    1. Uses less water for changes
    2. Takes food out of main tank for worms

You might even want to bump up the heat with no fish to kill all eggs effectively

  3. Kind of an odd suggestion but can you get some media in a mesh bag that’s populated with bacteria from the tank then a bucket of water and let it sit overnight at least or maybe even aerate it. Kind of “age” your water. Then put the water in your tank. Put your media back in the tank til next time.

Chloramines in the water will show on ammonia tests but not actually be available ammonia. Treat tap water with appropriate dechlorinator and continue your treatments

“My tank is a box of pee. Please don’t suggest I remove the pee from the box. How else can I get rid of the literal pee in a box?”

    <– you, lol

(Like, I’m really not trying to be mean, man. But you gotta keep doing water changes.
