This isn't him but this is what he used to look like. Is beta fish dying in 4 years normal? He lived in a relatively small but we'll kept tank, since we couldn't afford a big tank. Near the end of his life my baby started to lose his fins. (Depression?). I tried to put a female inside but it didn't fix the issue.

Did he die of old age or because of his environment?

  1. 4 years is actually pretty good for a Betta nowadays. Some don’t even live for a year in their new homes due to their poor genetics; they’ve been bred for looks over health for years.

That being said, I’m not sure what you mean by “small” tank, but 5gal is the minimum sustainable size for a Betta. It is also reckless to put Bettas together unless you plan to breed them and have done research to do so safely. Long-finned Bettas are prone to fin rot if the water quality is poor, and they also easily tear their fins on sharp decorations or bite them out of frustration. Or, old Bettas just get kinda haggard sometimes.

He looks like a sunrise in the desert or the ember of a bonfire. I’m so sorry for your loss.

He was within the average lifespan range of his species, especially accounting for the fact like he was likely already an adult when you purchased him. I don’t think this is on you, I think this is just the natural end of a life.

  3. Yeah your mistake was introducing him to a female
that could have been a big problem for stress reasons.

As for small no idea what you mean?

Also yeah 4 years is a while
