I have a tank similar to this one (Petco brand) but the measurements are the same (empty and dry ATM)

Is it possible to have a successful betta setup in a tank this deep?

I was considering doing a deep substrate layer because I wanted to add one or two aquarium caves in the dirt/sand layer and heavily plant the tank with floating plants and lots of rest spots near the surface so the future betta could have places to rest so they can breathe.

If it's too deep I could switch to doing a pea puffer tank.

thanks in advance for any help!!

For a young, healthy short finned betta no problems especially heavily planted if you got plants leaves reaching near the top it can perch on. Also thick substrate means it won’t even have to swim the full 21in to the surface. I consider thick to be 4-6 inches and with water being “I’m assuming” below the top fill line” there really shouldn’t be any issues. But if it’s something like a double tail, Halfmoon, rosetail any of those super big finned ones it’s going to struggle to deal with even the water flow from the filter (probably). Good husbandry is key but it’s definitely doable

  2. In this hobby i heard you can have too little but never too much, if that makes sense. So i can imagine it wouldn’t be too big and your betta with thrive and love it!

  3. Ive had a veil-tale alone in a 55 gallon for a while, he loved it. 2 things, low water turnover as bettas arent super strong swimmers – this shouldn’t affect adequate filtration unless your adding other fish. And plants and decor that allows them to perch/rest closer to the surface. Obviously a short fined male or female would do better then their fancy-finned counterparts.

Deep substrate can cause more issues than solve. Anaerobic bacteria can develop, especially if limiting water turnover. If you have little aquarium experience i wouldnt do this. Caves and hidding spots are exelent ideas, and can be achieved much easier and safer with decor (rocks glued together, prefabricated decor, or some plant pots turned sideways).
