I recently bought a rarer rod that has been out of production for a while now, it's brand new with tags and I love it. Except there's some Mould on the exposed parts of the Cork that haven't been plastic sealed at the factory. It doesn't seem to be a tough or deeply penetrated mould as I can rub it away with my thumb and reveal the bare cork.
Several people who build rods have recommended a gentle coating of White Vinegar, letting it sit for about an hour, brushing the mould out carefully and finishing with light rinsing and drying thoroughly.
How would you go about removing this?

Sandpaper
Magic eraser and water. Then coat with u-40.
Before sand paper work your way first with a wet rag. See what comes off. If it starts breaking apart stop immediately.
If you don’t see any progress and you’re not damaging the cork – move to a little diluted solution with dish soap. Try using like a tooth brush to see if any of it will come off.
Try a harder brush depending on how the cork is reacting.
If all else fails prob use like 200+ to see if u can get it down… use cork sealant after
Before getting it wet…
I’d take the area around it with painters tape or protect it with plastic wrap or something.
You gotta soak the cork
I’ve had success with bleach and hot soapy water.
But…. I have heard that an acid, like vinegar, is actually the correct way to clean mold off a porous surface.
The BEST thing to use is those magic eraser pads for cork. After that-or before-get some U40 cork seal. Follow directions and apply. This keeps the cork sealed AND looking new for years. It’s the first thing i do when i get a new road and people always ask if i got a new rod. Just use one of those cheap foam brush’s to apply, thank me later
