I’m setting up my first tank, and I noticed this ghostly growth on my wood. It started growing two days after I added the wood to the tank. I’ve also noticed some small bubbles occasionally rising from it, so there’s some sort of aerobic activity going on?

A normal, harmless biofilm that grows in basically all new wood put into tanks. Microorganisms feeding on the sugars and things left in the wood. It’ll go away once those sugars are exhausted.
Biofilm. A harmless bacteria that loves organic matter, especially driftwood. It’s very common to new tanks and will eventually fade. It’s a tasty snack to algae eaters as well. The bubbles you’re seeing are indeed the result of aerobic respiration as it decomposes the surface layer of wood.

Ghost
Depending on what part of the world the wood was harvested, some forests can be very haunted. Spirits find their way into the wood fibers and are re-released as ghostly ectoplasm once rehydrated in our aquariums.
