Hey all. I've just upgraded to a canister filter from a internal filter(fluval 207) I just realised I've got no idea about how to set it up. I've got a few questions I hope I could get some clarification on. Tank is 4 foot long 182ltr (approximately 50gal)

-whats the best order to have my media in? Bottom, middle, top
-should I have my hoses on either side of the tank or can I have both on the one side?
-if I need to have them either side. Should the inlet or outlet be closest to the canister?

Appreciate the time these get answered.

Here's a photo of my tank

I’m sorry, this isn’t helpful, but just jumping in to say that’s a great looking tank šŸ™‚

  2. You typically want the water to go through a course then fine sponges. The logic being the course sponge licks up the big bits of gunk and the finer sponge the smaller bits.

If you are using biogravel (or something similar) then you want the water to hit that last. You dont want that stuff to be doing the mechanical filtration.

As for the outlets, having them next to each other is the widely accepted “best” way of placing them.

I think “Pondguru” on YouTube has a good guide for setting up a fluval 307 (which is pretty much the same as a 207).
