Ladies and gentlemen, I bought some flies to go with my Guideline Embrace 9' #9 because this year I want to try catching pike. Do you have any tips for a beginner? 🎣

  1. Use a wire leader,
Don’t worry about making pretty casts, pike don’t care.

The longer pliers you have, the better. Pike will inhale flies!

Get a big net, keeps the pike contained and calm during de-hooking

Even if your fly gets torn (and it will), keep fishing with it. Any motion on the water will draw fish. Your fly may last less than 5 fish before disintegrating, so don’t get too emotionally attached to them.

I’m a pike on fly convert. They’re an absolute riot to catch!

  2. Fickle_Scarcity9474 on

My advice? Sinking line, slow and fast retrieve ( never the same pattern ) and pls go really early in the morning or late evening otherwise you will waste a day.

Don’t forget the terminals, pikes can chew the line.

  3. Smoke-A-Beer on

I find they like flies that suspend, gives them a lot of time to eye it up, then when you twitch it away they will strike. Retrieve all the way back to you, pike often follow sometimes 5-6feet behind. Leave it in the water in-front of you and continue to animate. Only cast again when you’re sure nothing is following.

  4. Always strip set. It’s the only way to sink the hook in that toothy mouth. If you lift your rod to set, you’ll lose fish. They are a blast!
