I’d love to set this up so I can cast righty and reel lefty. My dad gave me this old rod and reel a long time ago, can I switch this so the line is on the bottom and the reeling is on the left?

I’ve tried googling this a bit but any of the YouTube videos I’ve seen have a hex bolt or something to flip so I’m not sure if this reel can do it. Thanks!

For sure, I would take it to your local fly shop. They should be able to help you.

  2. It’s a bearing that gets flipped 180 degrees. Also, most reels come with “left hand” retrieve because most people are right handed so they cast with that hand. That may mean it was changed to Right hand retrieve. If you can find the manual, online, it may show you how. Or, take it to your local fly shop. They can tell you how or may just do it for nothing.

It’s not that complicated, just reverse the line i.e. walk the line out on a grassy field and then rewind it the other way. You don’t need to do anything to the reel – it’ll be fine. Whilst you are at it, I’d suggest that you add some braided backing line to take the fly line level up to outer edge of the larger holes. It’ll make the reel easier to use and give you more running line if you hook into something that really runs. Just be careful that you attach it to the ‘reel end’ of the fly line, as the line is not symmetrical (it’s a weight forward or WF line).

Search on ‘how to load a fly line’ – there’ll be umpteen videos on YT to help you 😉
