He will stick pretty close to me in the woods and is excellent at alerting to bears and coyotes around camp. He even follows close on the bank when I fish but once he sees me casting on an area he gets too interested and often jumps in the water to see what I’m after. I can command him to stay but that isn’t really what I’m after I just want to bring him fishing, let him roam but still be able to catch fish. Anyone have luck training a dog to be a good fishing buddy? I’m not even sure what behavior I want… any tips or experience would help.

  1. I’ll be interested in these comments. I’ve had half a dozen Labradors and they’ve all gone fishing with me. Two of them “got it” and understood what I was doing. They’d largely meander the bank and then when I got one on the line they’d leap into the water haha. The other 4 were clueless and just ruined the water

  2. I wish I had a good suggestion. We had a husky mix my son and I took everywhere fishing and he did the same thing – mostly when we caught something. He just had to see what was going on.

  3. Teaching him to double haul will improve his fishing tremendously. That’s the advice I keep seeing

  4. I tether my dog with a leash when I fish. There was some mild protesting when he was younger, but he knows the drill now.

  5. I got lucky with a lab/poodle cross, once she figured out that I get excited when I have a fish she started to watch for me, I swear she now looks for them in the water and stands looking at them, because when I cast where she’s staring theres generally a fish
