Looking for advice from more experienced anglers but I’m currently considering the following items for my new primary setup.

᛫ 11’ Mh Ugly Stik Carbon Surf Spinning Rod

᛫ KastKing ReKon 6000 Saltwater Spinning Reel

I’m thinking a 40lb Braid and I have 25lb fluorocarbon to use for leaders.

Could probably use more specific tackle recommendations but I have clear bubble floats and random assortment of some things.

I started getting into fishing on the big island of Hawai’i around Kau and South Kona areas last year. I picked up a Shimano FX 9’ rod, Shimano FX 4000 reel then got spooled with 20lb braid at S Takunaga in Hilo. I also picked up a Tsunami Bracer II 7’ 4000 combo as a spare and bait fish.

I’m hoping to catch Omilu (bluefin trevally), Mu (bigeye emperor) and other decent species available out here.

So far I mostly seem to catch Hagi (black triggerfish), Po’opa’a (stocky hawkfish), To’au (black tail snapper), Ta’ape (bluestripe snapper), Kūpīpī (blackspot sergeant) Roi (peacock grouper) and Menpachi (soldierfish)

  1. To’au and Ta’ape no matter the size either cook, kill or use as baid since they are invasive
