For context: my boyfriend and I inadvertently cycled a 3.5gal tank that only had a snail (Jalen Carter, not pictured) & Java fern in it. My dad, a life-long tropical fish enthusiast, is a dangerous man with an Amazon gift card in his hands, thus Lady Gaga become a new addition to our household about a month ago. Her Amazon listing described her as a “female half moon koi betta”. Lady Gaga loves to flare her gills, & she has made a hell of a bubble nest surrounding some n-joy pothos cuttings I put on the top of her tank. I recently acquired a 20gal tank that I will start cycling this weekend. Ideally I would add a school of ember tetras or some other nanos to the new tank with Lady Gaga. So this is where my curiosity surrounding her gender is coming from.

The best way to know is look for a white spot under her belly like a little white bump
This betta does seem to have a black beard all males once they reach adulthood which is around 6-8 months they get a black color under there face and the girls get a white small bump on there bellies that’s how u can tell the sex of your betta
Hmm I suspect Lady Gaga could be a Lord. I got a betta which is my first shrimp killer a few months ago (rip amano shrimp, 6-year survivors of my first two betta fish), but he has been fine with my glowlight tetras, so you may be okay
Also female bettas can make bubble nests it’s just more common for males to do it so just check for the egg spot google pics of what it looks like or I’ll attach a picture of what it looks like if that’s missing then you have a young male

On my koi femal it’s hard to see because she always kind of tucks these two small thin fins underneath her belly but if you watch ur betta long enough u will be able to see it , that is of course if it’s not a male

I can see the ovaries, this is a girl. Also, when she flares, the does not have a “beard” (the skinny bits underneath the gill-covers that is under the chin of male bettas).
Their little faces when they flare makes me laugh every time. Awww big scary wittle fish! So mean! Cutie 😂
