The weather has been nice for a week or two so today I headed for the first session of the year. Expectations were low since I had never fished this early into the year.
My plan was simple: two rods, 7wt streamer rod with intermediate line and a couple woolly buggers and a 5wt with floating line for nymphs and dries. Try to cover alot of water since I didn’t know exact spots where the fish would be holding.
I started the session scraping the bottom of the deepest slowest pool with the woolly buggers. No fish just a couple flies snagged and lost. I decided to change spots. I skipped the faster parts of the river and stopped to fish another slow pool. Only a couple casts and after stripping in and bouncing my fly along the bottom right beneath the tip of my rod a beautiful native brown took my woolly bugger. I was very suprised since I thought I’d get skunked for sure.
I would go on to fish for an hour or so but didn’t see any more signs of fish. Still a great start for the season.

I should add this river is mostly a stockie rainbow spot, but they only stock during the summer which is why I had very little confidence.
