I didn't feel like leaving the house and spending more money so a quick Google search said using this hoppes 9 gun oil is ok for using on fishing reels.
So the question is is it ok or did I goof?

You didn’t goof. Gun oil adds lubrication but keeps the gears from getting gummed up.

It will work but be careful not to over oil your bearings. On little drop is all you need.

I’ve used gun oil for years on my reels, and it’s been great. Fixed a squeaky pantry door hinge recently as well.
