I am now on my third heater, I went through 2 pulaco heaters thinking the first one was just defective (it kept the water at 74-75 degrees F) but the second one I received was the same. I returned it and got the tetra heater (I’ve used in the past no issues) but this also is only keeping my tank at like 76 degrees consistently. Both of these heaters were appropriate for my tank size (5.5 gallon), fully submerged, and I have three thermometers on my tank that all read the same temp. What is going on!?!?!

I have the same out of tank thermometer. I always use an in the tank gauge thermometer to check too. Even if my outside one reads 26.6-27.4 it’s always 28 inside the tank. I’d check both.

  2. In my experience you do not need to keep the water at 78. 74-75 is perfectly fine and there has been some research from others in this subs that lower temperatures extend your fish life span significantly

You could get a second heater of the same rating and run both at the same time. Not bad to have redundancy. Also, this temp is fine for a betta, so it’s not a huge deal

is this an adjustable heater? i would recommend one if not.
i would definitely try to keep the tank at 79/80. my bettas prefer it, they are active and happy. but it’s personal preference.

  5. Get an adjustable heater so you can bump the temp to the right zone instead of relying on ‘pre set’ heaters. They usually never keep water at the correct temp.
