  1. The fishing line has to go around the bail (the metal wire on the reel, which you can open for casting and close to reel the line in),then into the rod guides (the holes on the rod).

Slip the line under the line retainer then out it through the eyes of the rod.

  3. As others have said, the line has to go under the bail (metal wire) before going through the eyes.

If you’ve already got something tied on, you don’t need to restring it. You can just loosen the drag (dial on top) all the way and the spool comes off. Then open the bail and put the spool back on.

You got good advice but wanna say that’s a great beginner combo and a sick color!

  5. And don’t reel a slack line like that. Use your hand to hold the line or get some tension in it when you get it set up right the way others have suggested. If the line has a lot of slack, you will get a mess.

  6. As others have mentioned, the line should be under the bail.

If there’s no tension on the line that could cause the line to jump off the reel, you could add tension by adding some weight to the end of the line then reeling, or you could hold the line with 1 hand and reel with the other.

Either way the problem is reeling in a slack line will cause the line to lay on the reel loosely, and therefore come off the reel.
