I'm setting up a 10 gallon aquarium. Mostly for plants. Maybe 1 fish.
My friend gave me several things including what he called a bio bag. He said to just put it under the gravel and this will help keep the tank clean.
I'm not seeing anything like this when I search for 'bio bag'. This seems like something I'm supposed to put in a filter. I bought the AquaMiracle Aquarium Filter 3-Stage in-Tank Filter.
Thank you for any advice for what to do with this.

this is filter media, it’s good for storing benefical bacteria. you can put it in your filter or under the substrate
it provides space for beneficial bacteria to grow colonies on and for a healthy tank its a vital componant (its known as biological filtration) as opposed to mechanical which is the larger bits you filter out with filter floss and such
under the substrate or if you can fit it within your filter is also fine
Thank you! He was right. He also said to only clean it with tank water. Tap water could kill it. He thought that might only refer to city water but wasn’t sure. I’m on well water. Am I safe to just rinse it off with tap water?
If he gave it to you wet, the idea was to seed your new tank to help “cycle” it faster. However if the media has dried, the beneficial bacteria has mostly died so it will just act as media for beneficial bacteria to live in but it will no longer help seed the tank.
If you have some time maybe give it back to him to put in his tank for a couple weeks to reseed. Then put it in your tank wet to help seed your tank and shorten the time it takes to cycle. Filter medium or a bio bag can really help that process a lot (shorten it by weeks!)
This image gave me Trypophobia 😂
