Got mod approval to share this — not selling anything, just wanted to share something I originally made for myself to help save line using backing.

I used to fill all my reels straight with braid or fluorocarbon. The problems I kept running into were either:

• my spool of line wasn’t enough to fully fill the reel (usually because it was thinner than expected), or

• it would fill it, but the leftover line wasn’t enough to properly spool another reel

Either way it just felt wasteful.

I started using backing more consistently to avoid that, but I was basically guessing how much to use every time. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes I had to redo it.

I know there are already some calculators out there, but I wanted something really simple that just answers the main question — how much backing do I need if I only want a certain amount of line on top?

I also added a couple extra things I found helpful:

• estimated line savings

• estimated handle turns if you don’t have a line counter or don’t feel like measuring line out

So I made a basic one where you plug in:

• reel capacity

• how much top line you actually want

• line diameters

and it gives you the backing amount to fill the spool correctly.

I’ve been using it for a bit now and it just makes everything more consistent. Biggest thing for me is being able to plan it out — like knowing a 200 yard spool can fill multiple reels evenly instead of guessing.

If anyone wants to check it out:

If not, no worries. It’s free, no accounts or anything like that.

I’m still tweaking it, so any feedback (good or bad) is definitely appreciated 🤙

Hope it helps someone.
