Hello! First time betta fish owner and I chose this guy at the store the other day (tank still cycling). Before I bring him home, does he look healthy and all okay? I know it’s hard to tell from a picture but is he flaring? Do you think he’ll be good with other friends in his tank 😅

i’m no expert but “friends” are always very very risky, they are agressive fishy they will fight almost everything, some Bettas even beef with snails.
I guess he looks fine, he looks fully grown tho, i don’t think he is a juvenile
While he looks healthy visually, as a first time owner I would not reccomend a betta with such long finds, they come with so much more problems and weaker immune systems, and they are more susceptible to fin rot and fin damage, I would reccomend if your tank size is around 7.5gallons or more to get a shorter fin betta, if you still want a fancy look, try a “Koi Halfmoon Plakat”, now if your tank is less than 7.5 and you really really love this guy go for it but be prepared to have a lot of issues, can you tell me about your tanks setup though and which country you’re in?
he looks great! what are his tankmates gonna be?
if youre planning on tankmates i would have a backup tank prepared in case it doesn’t work out and you need to separate the betta
He won’t be good with other tank mates unless it’s VERY specific and that’s still a gamble. As far as healthy it’s always a gamble with them. Both bettas I’ve bought in my adult life looked ROUGH at the store and thrived after we brought them home- but we also spent a fair amount to make sure their tanks were good for them.
It all depends on the personality of the fish, My betta fish is a Predator, It doesn’t show any mercy even in a 15g tank. 11g isn’t a good choice for tank mates but still if it’s calm then you have a chance just be careful i almost gave my betta some expensive snacks… almost.
“Friends” is a reach… I love my bettas, but when I introduced shrimp, I knew they’d prob eat them.
Many tankmates are not suitable for bettas, as they’ll either attack him or he’ll attack them. Bottomfeeders, shrimp, snails are iffy depending on the betta’s temperment

This is my tank, just FYI if that affects anything! 🐠
I would buy him. He was good and the pics.
There are 73 different types of identifiable betta species in the world. Considering mankind has been breeding them for thousands of years, I’m sure there’s a lot of unique genetic combos that would have never met in nature. That being said, his face has a lot of wrinkles and I too would be slightly hesitant to bring him home. It does make me wonder if he’s very elderly or sickly. I have no scientific argument for him being unhealthy he just doesn’t look like the bettas I have.
On a side note a lot of folks are saying no to tank mates. That’s more of a question of the bettas personality. Just avoid fin nippers and other labyrinth fish. You mentioned having a back up community tank, you’re doing things the responsible way.
