Thanks to the few people with good advice on DIY trips to the Coyhaique area a few months ago. I’ve just finished a week in the area and am happy to add some observations for what it’s worth.

There are ridiculously high numbers of tiny trout that becoming frustrating once the fun wears off. For this reason I switched to large elk hair stimulator/caddis looking flies and discarded the nymph dropper to reduce the amount of them I was catching.

There is the opportunity for some ‘good’ fish, but the images online of big fish are deceptive and are almost all from private access only waterways deep in estancias or via boat on lakes (confirmed by a local guide). I think this is the reserve of you $10k lodge type customers, a day guide won’t put you there.

If you employ a guide to get dialled in, be really really clear about the type of experience you’re seeking. I thought I’d be walking/wading for decent fish but what I got was a float trip. Now this would suit a lot of people but isn’t my style, no complaints just make sure you’ve clarified it.

Flies and leaders, less important than placement. The decent fish are hard up against banks, weed lines and in skinny water between pools. Next to no sight fishing, search those areas and you should avoid a lot of the teeny tiny trout and pick up some larger ones.

A bit of Spanish would be great but not essential – if you were fluent it could definitely unlock some nice water.

The Nireguao was my favourite water, absolutely stunning, the wind is absolutely howling and the flower buds on reeds are very unforgiving!
Good luck 👌
