As the title states this is the second fish I’ve ever caught as I started fishing yesterday. Needless to say I tried to take a pic holding its mouth open like you would a bass, and found out pretty quickly that they have some sharp ass teeth!

Forgive the way I’m holding the fella, he was putting up a fight and I had no clue how to hold a fish till afterwards.

You’ve been blessed catching a Bowfin! A true North American fossil that hasn’t evolved since the Triassic Period. One of my favorite fish, and one of the hardest hitting fish in the lake!
Snakeheads can put up nasty battles. Always fun to catch, never fun to handle lol. Nice!
Bowfin? Yeah, stay far, far away from their mouths. Fun catch, but don’t stick a thumb in there.
Those of you saying it’s a snakehead are incorrect. This is a bowfin. They look similar, but have very obvious differences, primarily the fin positions.
Still a cool fish to catch.

Bowfin are some of the coolest freshwater fish imo they battle like hell and are tough as nails not to mention they’re living fossils. Deathmatch between snakehead vs bowfin I may take the bowfin
