Hi all, I have never posted on here ever. Maybe it's the heartbreak and desperation that's getting to me but I found out my Bowie passed just this morning. I have someone feeding and checking on him while I've been away and I just left home 2 days ago. Worst of all I'm out of town to celebrate Eid with family and will only return home in 4 days. I've been crying since I found out he's gone.

A little backstory:
I have never owned a fish in all my life and Bowie was my first which is why his death is hitting me really hard, especially now knowing that it may have been from a stupid mistake I made which I thought was harmless — filling his tank a bit too full which I found out through my partner that that might have caused him to drown/suffocate. I feel so guilty and so so stupid that I was careless and that mistake caused him his life. I cherish my pets greatly, I have two rabbits both 5 years old now. I only had my Bowie since November of last year. He was the best fish ever, full of personality and I named him Bowie cause his colours reminded me of Ziggy Stardust.

My question may be a little odd but bear with me, would it be weird to freeze him until I can fully bury him when I return home in a few days? I hate to have him buried without me as much as I hate that I will have to face his little lifeless self. But I'd rather be there to see him off (sorry for being dramatic). Hope anyone can offer some advice as I searched and saw it was best to remove your dead fish immediately and not let them sit in the aquarium for too long.

Thank you.

p.s If you are worried about his split tail in the video – unfortunately, that happened when I brought him home for the first time and put him in his tank. I was careful with every single step but that still happened. He was such a happy boy and he adapted so quickly in his tank.

Do whatever you want and whatever you think is best and works best for you.
    Rip Bowie!

  2. Please remove him from the tank as soon as possible and keep him in the freezer until you’re able to properly bury him. That’s likely the best option in your situation.
Also, bettas are capable of breathing air from the surface, so it’s very unlikely that filling the tank too much caused this.
    This is not your fault.
I’m truly sorry for your loss
