Keep seeing people say they get clogged with weeds/debris.
I mostly fish open water so not really an issue for me—but is it actually that bad?

They do get clogged. I have a Merc 80hp. If im running 1/2 throttle or higher it seems to be fine but any slower and it’ll clog the grate. I’ve seen the stomp grates but boy howdy they’re costly. All I do is trim the motor up and pull the junk off. I do try and stay out of any heavy stuff. I live in Florida now so whenever I pull the boat out I always have a few stragglers im picking out. No big deal

Depends on where you are, my father ran jet drives for several decades, I can only remember a couple of time that we had problems with clogging. My father had made a rake to reach under the boat and clear the grate, so clearing it was easy. We regularly went offshore, to right up in creeks, but we don’t get huge amounts of weed around here, plastic bags were our biggest problem.
