Curious to hear from others—what do you think beginners should be tracking after each trip? And for those just starting out, is this something you’ve thought about doing or does it seem like overkill?
When I first started, I tracked my trips on a little notebook with details about the day. I began to notice patterns, on what works, what doesn’t, and when certain fish are more active. It definitely helped me become more consistent in trout and bass fishing.
That’s the beauty of fishing: no matter how long you’ve been doing it, there’s always something new to learn.

I typically track date/time, barometric pressure, air temp, water temp, wind direction and water conditions (clear, muddy, etc.). I also track what I caught (how many, species). And then what lures I used along with which ones caught fish.
