There was a power outage for around an hour or two at midnight. During the whole time, I stayed downstairs to get ready to check on my fish and their hang on back filters. I fell asleep and when my parents woke me up since the power was back, I straight away rushed to my tank to grab a cup to get the filter running again. My blurry and rushed ass with only one task in mind thought all my guppies would be sleeping. They were, but one had come up the exact same time I scooped some water to pour into my filter. I was so rushed that I didn't even turn sufficient lighting on. The fish got into the filter and I was so panicked I looked around and just stopped. The poor fish I've been raising since my mom impulsively bought fishes for herself and then they died and another gave birth. I had that fish since it was born just on January and I feel so horrible. My heart was pounding so hard the whole time but when I looked in the mirror I just looked so empty of emotion. I removed the fish from the filter and kept my mouth shut about it to my parents. Now there's 14 left.

Has this ever happened to anyone before..?

  1. It happens. Don’t beat yourself up, you were ultimately doing your best for them. Next time, if the powers out for a while you can add the filter media inside the tank and they should really be fine. No need to worry.

Be kind to yourself, this is an honest mistake. You were trying to do the best to care for your fish and an accident happened. I really feel for you.
