I am loving this silly little 20 gallon hex tank. Posted when I had it mostly set up a little while back. Have added rock scape (to try and convince my loaches to come out of that pagoda) and moved some plants around. Finally having consistently good water tests (0 ammonia and nitrite, really low nitrites) and consistently clear water. The plan is to not add anything (that costs money 🤣) till mid-summer, with the possible exception of some tall leafy plants in the back to eventually create a sort of natural backdrop, and maybe some java fern or java moss on the driftwood “tree.”

Looking for any advice, and one specific piece of advice. Sometime around July I want to add 1-2 “feature fish,” and I’d love to get some suggestions!

Here is the current setup:

• 20 gallon hex tank (tall)

• Live plants, fine gravel substrate, hanging filter, air stone, basic heater, driftwood, river rocks and petrified wood

•temp: 79F

• 6 mollies, 6 serpaes, 3 kuhli loaches, 1 albino bristle nose pleco(Hank), 2 mystery snails (Carl and Karl)

Thanks for weighing in!

  1. Looks great!! Awesome job.

IMHO your tank is pretty fully stocked and I wouldn’t add anything else, it is possible to do so if you’re looking to up your water changes and get a filter rated for a higher tank size. Lots of fish prefer more horizontal swimming space so your options may be a bit limited. I use this calculator to see what’s doable for tank size (shape does still need to be considered) -https://www.aquariumstockingcalculator.com/

The calculator says you’re already overstocked, but I think it’s nicely stocked as long as you can maintain water quality! My only other critique is that the loaches are shoaling and should be in groups of 6+

Really nice tank. Remember this day because your are going to have set backs some major which is completely normal in this hobby. You want to enjoy this hobby as much as you can when things are going right.

It’s a cute tank but not really suited for the all fish you have in it. They require at least 40 gallons.
