I’m looking to buy (first timer) a used 14-16 ft Alumnacraft to take fishing in local lakes. I can’t afford new, there’s lots of these boats in fb marketplace for sale. This boat is for my wife & self. What are the things I need to know, check out when purchasing one with a small motor & trailer.

Trailer component, especially bearings. Having had a bearing go out while towing a new (to me) boat home, it is something I always check.

Meet at a boat dock so they can start it and run it. Test forward, neutral, reverse and see that it shifts well. Grinding or gear skipping could mean expensive lower end repairs.

Make sure the motor “pees” properly. Many have impellers in dire need of replacement.

While on the water, look for water coming in. Riveted boats are a bit more leaky than welded hulls.

    Good luck!
