This fish means so much to me! After countless, and I mean COUNTLESS sessions spent hunting these spotty silver torpedoes (30-40 sessions) without me having any good results to show for it, I FIIIINALLY caught one.

This is a sea-run brown trout and it’s nicknamed the fish of 1000 casts here in Sweden. I’ve caught one before during perch fishing, but never before when actually fishing for them. This catch means so much to me and I’m genuinely so happy about it. Soooo many hours were spent just casting and casting.

I used my knowledge of where these fish are supposed to be in the early spring and it was crucial to have that knowledge today. Usually, you want to fish trout in headwind and in the early spring, you want to seek out the warmest possible water. The trout prefer the warmer water to help with their metabolism. Just half a degree in difference can matter. The first spot was a headwind spot, but there was ice there that had blown in, thanks to strong winds. That meant colder water.

So…what did we do instead?

Well, instead of following the ”rule” to always fish with wind blowing towards where you’re fishing, applying the (more crucial) warm water logic, I decided to fish in shallow sand bays. Sand warms up much faster than rock. I also tried to find stillness. No wind, because the water that was still was most likely warmed up. This proved crucial.

15th cast in this new spot and I get a hit and suddenly I have a trout on. It goes airborne and I lose it in 10 seconds. My friend hook one 2 minutes later. Smaller. It also jumps out of the water 3 times before he unfortunately loses it too. We leave that place to rest for a little while and before leaving (knowing it has warmed up some more), we try it one more time.

2nd cast, this fish follows my lure and misses, only to keep following and hitting the lure again, 3 meters from my feet. Now I hook it and my buddy, first struggling to get the net out, finally gets it in the net.

One of the most meaningful fish I’ve ever caught.
