Went out with a hopper dropper today bc I’ve been seeing tons of grasshoppers and it’s warm and windy. This guy hit my dropper fly and I didn’t even realize it. It was a scramble to get control but I landed him! Switched to a little popper after and got some gills. Threw in the obligatory bass guy face/fish pic.

Warm water bass on the fly is hard to beat. Surface takes on a hopper or popper are violent — not like trout at all. I fish the Current River in Missouri for smallmouth. By mid-summer when the grasshoppers are actually hatching, you can walk the bank in that clear Ozark water and see them charge the fly from six feet away. The refusal rate goes up in gin-clear conditions but the ones that commit aren’t subtle about it.
