I am getting a lot of mixed advice from our LFS and research online so I wanted to post here to see what others are already doing and what has worked/not worked in their experience.
This is our betta. We currently have him in a 5 gallon but want to upgrade him into a bigger tank in a few weeks after we get back from our vacation.
I had two bettas (both male) when I was in college and they lived 3 years each. But I've learned way more about betta care and I wanted to be a better betta mom!
He's definitely the most mild-mannered betta I've ever had. He rarely flares and when he does, it's only when he sees his own reflection in the back of the tank. He only doesn't it for a little bit and then swims away lol. So I feel like he can have friends.
I was hoping to get maybe a snail and/or a small school of fish but I am worried about overcrowding and I don't want to overwhelm him. And I have this back up tank on the off chance it doesn't work out!
Any advice (or even critical feedback) is very welcome!!

Endless shrimp but bettas don’t make great tank mates with other fish and most snails have wildly different water parameter needs. Try researching a little and you will see what each creature’s needs are, and how they differ, and where some overlap can work.
My betta didnt like company.
Depending on how the betta does, ive had pretty good luck with Cory’s.
As long as the shrimp have plenty of places to hide, or are much larger than the bettas mouth, but still Neos, you can have shrimp. For reference I had 8 shrimp before betta, 3 maybe 1 more now. Lots of plant density so you can’t tell.
As many as you want.
