Hey y'all! I'm about to introduce a betta into my home once my tank cycles and I want to know y'all's opinions on the best starter bettas. I want to get that has the least chance of getting sick or injured. They don't have to be pretty, I'll love them nonetheless!

The only one I’d avoid is a dragon scale. They’re almost guaranteed to go blind due to “diamond eye” where the scales grow directly over their eyes.

Not a huge deal if you know ahead of time and can train your betta to eat in a certain location.

  2. I dont think there is a good type of betta in that way, But wild ones MIGHT be harder like those needing multiple, and very very specific tanks.
I think any betta is easy, but the best to not get sick is one that isnt overbred

Ive had an elephant ear female for a few months and she’s been great 😊

My thought process has become “the less tail there is, the less tail there is to become infected and split”. My first was a delta and we dealt with constant tail issues his whole 2 years with me. I’m 100% only having short fin females or plakats moving forward

Based on the chart, I think I have a Delta. But I wouldn’t make a recommendation just yet.

Depending on your tank, you should keep in mind that most of these fins aren’t meant for swimming and can get caught on things. If that’s not a problem, I’d wait to choose my first betta in person—it’s way cooler to see which one you like right away.

I love my plakat bettas, they do need a larger tank (10g) but are more fun to watch.

Plakat or female. They can actually swim and move properly and be as active as they want to, unlike long fins who are weighted down and crippled by the curtains they’re dragging.

Plakats and spade tails tend to be much more active and suffer less fin issues. Dragon scales are prone to diamond eye (which can cause blindness), so steer clear. I personally would stay away from anything with a longer tail than a veil tail and stay away from the rare, exotic strains.

Plakat and short fins for sure. They can actually navigate their tank and are less prone to tearing or biting their own fins. Also learn about the diamond scale coloration and maybe avoid that. I didn’t know and got a plakat that now has color covering one of her eyes. She still handles play, but will likely go fully blind eventually. They don’t put diamond scale on the labels, so you have to be able to recognize it

  10. Plakat and females. Anything short tail. I also feel like long tail bettas are more inbred

Id say a plakat or a female. A lot of people dont find them as visually impressive due to the smaller fins, but theyre still awesome. Bettas with larger fins are more prone to snagging, fin rot, etc., plus all that weight can be heavy and affect their swimming. With crowntails, it can also be a little harder to identify any fin issues since their fins already have that “frayed” look.
