Aquariums: Black Background? No background? Something else?
The back background makes the sand and plants look really good, as well as hiding wires and equipment, but then my beloved betta doesn't stand out. But with no background all the unsightly stuff shows. Any ideas on what to do?

Black background and get some taller plants to both help your Betta stand out and provide it with more places to hide and enrichment.

I prefer a black or really dark blue background.
