Most of my Bettas live with shrimps who love cholla wood, and I’ve just received a parcel with 6 nice 5” pieces in. How can I make them safe for my Bettas? I’m thinking about burying one end in the substrate and blocking the other with bits torn off a moss ball. Advice please!

The open ends are about 2cm diameter which seems small, but not to a curious Betta fish!

I’ve never used it but I’ve heard plenty of horror stories of peoples Betta getting into them and not being able to get out and drowning. If your going to put it into your tank then blocking off any Betta sized holes with moss sounds like a good plan but I’d still be weary.

  3. Bettas are like fluffy cats, you wouldn’t think they’d be able to squeeze into a space until they do it. I’ve not used cholla wood myself but I just saw a recent post about someone’s betta getting stuck in one.

I lean more towards the side that maybe it’s better to return them rather than use them. Hopefully someone can provide a different and better solution!
