These floats(?) came in a bundle with some other lures and fishing things. It looks like a float, but there is no place to thread the line. is this something else or am I just silly not knowing how to use a float?

I think you use little rubber bands that slip over each end and your line to hold the line to the bobber. Usually they come in the pack with the bobbers.

Those are jig floats; normally come with some little rubber/silicon bands or ties. You run the line along the side and basically tie or cinch it to the float. Keeps your rig at a fixed depth while offering good for movement.
